I have Toshiba A205-S4777 laptop (core 2 duo processor, 2 GB RAM, finger print reader, in-built webcam, wi-fi).

It has Vista pre-installed. I am planning to switch to WIndows XP for various reasons. I use my laptop at home to surf internet and work on website/software development using various open source/free tools available. Basically I am working on a start-up of my own.

I am wondering if I shall go for XP Home or Pro. My main concerns, which I found from various posts on net, are –
1. Instability i.e. frequent crashes of Home edition.
2. Microsoft decision to not support Home edition after 2 years of release of Vista.
3. Can I create a recovery disc (CD/DVD) in XP home/pro, similar to what we can do in Vista?
4. XP Pro comes with spreadsheets and powerpoint, while Home edition doesn’t.

Don’t know if the above point are true. Which feature s of XP Pro I may miss presently or in future, considering the kind of work I am doing?

And lastly, what is your suggestion?

Thanks.

I got my 2007 taxes on the H&R Block pre paid emerald card. I was buying my wife a car and had the guy run the card. The card machine didn’t say or print anything. We didn’t know what to do, the guy said "for some reason this card isn’t working." We paid with a different card. When I got home and checked my account, the money had been deducted from the card and put on hold for an 8 week length to be paid to the dealership. We essentially have paid for the car twice! The dealership has done everything they can to get the money released. My wife has went into the h&r block office and made dozens of calls to the 1 800 number. Most calls you get hung up on. All I want is for them to release my money back to me so that I can pay off the other card. I am being charged interest on the amount. I am thinking about taking them to small claims court and exposing them to the media! Warn everyone you know….this card is a hoax!
Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for your time.
Thank you all for your answers! Yesterday, H&R Block admitted their mistake, apologized, and gave me my money back! I will never make the mistake of using their services again. I appreciated all of the responses and am going to put this question up to a vote, as I cant decide the best answer!

I have a custom built PC with:

1. Motherboard: Asus P6T
2. Processor: Intel i7 920
3. Memory: Corsair DDR3 3GB
4. Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT.
5. Monitor: SonicView (forgot the Model number)
6. OS: XP

The strange things happened are:
1. I have a pre-installed webcam on my monitor, however it was not working (saying that it couldn’t detect the webcam). I tried to connect the monitor to my laptop and everything works just fine.

2. Some software are not running normally on my PC. Some programs get error messages, some are stuck in the middle of processing.

3. When I do an alt + tab from a full screen window. It would take like 3 seconds to refresh the monitor and get back to the other window.

4. AutoPlay for CDs / USBs are not working. (I’ve checked settings in Control Panel and the settings turn out to be perfect for allowing AutoPlay).

5. I just bought a new printer (HP C5380) and when I print stuffs, it could stop in the middle of the process while the small monitor on the printer still says ‘Printing…’ Additionally, print queues don’t want to be displayed even though the tool tip says there’s one document pending.

I do not know what to do. I suspect that it is the motherboard though. Anyone could give me insight or suggestions on what to do? Thanks in advance.

Okay, I’ve posted 2 other questions about this, but this is my final one.

Im looking for a laptop for myself, a 14 year old 8th grader. I will use it greatly for school projects, pictures, editing those pictures, music and a downloadable game or two. I need a computer that runs very smoothly for the game and has a lot of storage for many programs. I will be using the laptop every day for the game (Combat Arms, a war game) and for school things and music and so on. I have to have a laptop, and the computer I’m looking at right now is called a Studio 15 by Dell. I’ve loaded it with some good things, and I’ll post those in a moment. The price is very pricey, ,194 because I’ve put on some of the best things into the laptop. I will be doing a plan though where I pay a month. Plus, its no interest until October, 2009 and im hoping I can pay off the whole thing by then, and I think I can.

So the question is, when you look at the information about the laptop that I’ve posted below, and you know the requirements I need, is this a good computer? Any comments or suggestions? Changes I should make? Thanks in advance! ;D

Thank you for all your credible suggestions and info. I do work in the mental health field and maybe that is what is SOOOOOO frustrating about it. Without counseling or nagging him I do present options but I almost feel as though he has given up. Concerns me even though he says he is "safe" (re: suicidal ideations or thoughts). I do see sense guilt (not a good sign). He had even considered the thought of using our pre-marital counselor for his own individual counseling afterwards re: baggage and such. His ex-wife is a real &*$#@ and apparently told him some things that I guess are his "tapes" in his head replaying. He is a great guy but heck, I can’t deny my pleasures and goals and needs. I think his family is shocked and my friends seem a little in disbelief. Thanks again and maybe I can print the screening off and leave it with my workstuff in a place he will have to come across it and hopefully will contemplate taking the test. Thanks again. I will talk to his mom, too.
