if i'm wanting to be a commercial print model , is it easy to have my mom be my agent?
i’ve looked into this , and i have friends who have had experience with modeling.. and i can ask them many questions. but is it to hard to do on our own. or would i get more business with an agent?
i’ve read LOTS of comments from people on different agencies that there scams? please give me info
thanks!
You would get more work with a proper agent.
That is what they are in business for and they have the contacts and network to be able to promote their models properly.
Ok first … do you REALLY want your mom as your agent? If business goes sour there will hard feelings.
So many things can go wrong and when you start throwing money into the mix … you don’t want to risk your relationship with your mother like that.
On top of that an agent will know more about the industry than your mom.
I saw a series of you tube videos from an ex model on what to look out for (someone had posted it here) take a look at them. The video on scam companies has been removed by the author … probably to avoid libel.

You will definitely get more jobs with an agent because unlike acting, there is no equivalent to Casting Breakdown services in modeling.Clients still contact individual agencies when casting for a specific job. Almost 95% of commercial print work is booked through agencies so without an agency, how is your mother supposed to find you work? Does she know who is responsible for casting models for the J Crew catalog and when they do their casting? Does she know the ad exec responsible for the accounts of Pantene, Coca Cola, Tide, and other cosumer products who would be the ones casting models for upcoming print campaigns? If she doesn’t have these sorts of connections, then there is no way she can be your agent. And depending on which state you live in, she legally might not be able to act as your agent, as many states like NY, CA, FL, etc require agents to be licensed, post a bond, have an actual office, etc.
Your mom can be your manager, but it’s a really bad idea to have her as your agent if you want any chance of getting paid work.
You can avoid scams by knowing the warning signs. A legitimate agency ONLY makes money AFTER they book you on a job and take their commission. Period. Any agency asking you to pay them for photography, classes or anything else is not legit. Remember this rule and you’ll avoid being scammed
